Intravenous Urogram (IVU) Test Procedure:
An intravenous urogram (IVU), also known as an intravenous pyelogram (IVP), is an X-ray examination that
uses a contrast dye to visualize the entire urinary tract, including the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. This procedure helps diagnose various urinary tract abnormalities like blockages, malformations, and
scarring.
Before the Test:
Inform your doctor:
Discuss any allergies, medications you're taking, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
Fasting:
You may be asked to fast for 4-8 hours before the test to ensure clear X-ray images.
Hydration:
Drink plenty of fluids beforehand to help your kidneys filter the contrast dye.
Empty your bladder:
You'll need to empty your bladder before the test.
During the Test:
Intravenous injection:
A healthcare professional will inject a contrast dye into your vein, usually in your arm.
X-ray images:
A series of X-ray images will be taken at different intervals as the dye travels through your urinary tract. This typically takes 30-60 minutes.
Bladder filling: You may be asked to drink more fluids and empty your bladder again to obtain further images.
After the Test:
Drink plenty of fluids:
Continue drinking water to help flush out the contrast dye.
Monitor for side effects:
You may experience mild side effects like nausea, vomiting, or dizziness. These usually resolve within a day.
Test results: Your doctor will
discuss the test results with you
within a few days.
Additional Notes:
The IVU test is generally safe for most people. However, it may not be
suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions like severe
allergies, kidney disease, or uncontrolled diabetes.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women should inform their doctor before undergoing an IVU test.
The entire procedure, including preparation and recovery, may take 2-4 hours.
